01 / WHY NIGHTNIGHT SHIFT broadcasts from midnight until sunrise because that is when the city stops performing. The phones are quiet. The songs can be long. A station that only lives in daylight has to shout over everything; a station that lives after dark only has to speak clearly. We chose clarity.
02 / LOCAL MUSICIANSEvery hour of our schedule carries music made within a hundred miles of the transmitter — basement tapes, unreleased singles, demos dropped off at the studio door in paper sleeves. Local musicians keep overnight hours too; we put them on the air the same week they record, not the same quarter they market.
03 / LIVE SESSIONSOnce or twice a night the automation stands down and a band sets up in Studio A. Two takes, one microphone, no overdubs. If a truck passes outside, you hear the truck. That is not a flaw in the recording; it is the evidence that someone was actually here.
04 / LISTENER SUPPORTEDNo commercials between midnight and six. The overnight service is paid for by the people who use it — about twelve hundred households, one pledge drive each spring, and an unlocked door on Chapel Street where anyone can walk in and read the program log.
