HX-4 ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD MONITOR
ENGINEERING ARCHITECTURE
The Halloway HX-4 Environmental Field Monitor is a self-contained precision instrument for remote hydrological, atmospheric, and pedological telemetry. Built within a CNC-machined anodized aluminum monocoque, the unit operates in extreme ambient conditions without requiring external environmental shelters.
Equipped with a dual-redundant sensor bus, active thermistor compensation, and direct satellite/cellular sub-GHz packet broadcast, the HX-4 provides continuous field verification for surveyor teams and environmental research units.
FIELD CONFIGURATION & INTERFACE CALLOUTS
ATMOSPHERIC PROBE
Multi-parameter weather array featuring barometric pressure sensor, relative humidity sensor, calibrated ambient temperature thermistor, and volatile organic compound (VOC) sniffer.
FIELD DEPLOYMENT SEQUENCE
PROCEDURE CODE: SOP-HX4-009 // ALL STEPS MUST BE EXECUTED AND RECORDED PRIOR TO UNATTENDED LOGGING SESSION.
Perform visual inspection of outer anodized chassis, nitrile O-ring gaskets, desiccator optical window, and M12 waterproof connector threads. Ensure zero particulate accumulation.
Depress primary power toggle switch for 3.0 seconds until diagnostic chime sounds. Observe initial boot Power-On Self-Test (POST). Verify status code 0x00_OK on graphic LCD display.
Expose atmospheric probe to ambient standard air; execute 2-point zero/span thermal slope calibration cycle. Allow 120 seconds for thermistor stabilization.
Mount monitor chassis securely to non-magnetic tripod or earth anchor point. Ensure top GNSS receiver mast has clear zenith visibility (>120° unobstructed sky dome).
Select sampling frequency (default: 60s); initiate local internal flash recording session. Verify sub-GHz radio handshake or satellite packet transmission sequence.
Confirm live telemetry output values against redundant reference handheld meter. Variance must not exceed ±0.15% across all active active channels. Secure outer housing latches.

OPERATOR ANNOTATIONS & LOG RECORD
Ambient temperature dropped to -31.4°C during overnight logging window. Internal self-heating circuit maintained battery enclosure temperature at +4.2°C. No volumetric moisture probe offset or data dropouts recorded across 14,400 consecutive samples.
Marine aerosol accumulation detected on optical dust cap after 72 hours of exposure to direct salt spray. Relative Humidity channel registered +1.8% positive offset prior to distilled water rinse. Cleaned seal and re-calibrated zero reference at 15:10 UTC.
Sub-GHz long-range telemetry handshake verified with baseline station at 14.8 km direct line-of-sight distance over rugged granite topography. Packet error rate measured at 0.002%.
SERVICE NOTICES & SAFETY PROCEDURES
Ensure M12 soil interface connector threads are completely free of particulate matter before coupling. Sand or fine silica grit on the nitrile O-ring seal will compromise IP68 water resistance during deep soil submergence (>0.5m hydrostatic depth).
MANDATORY REMEDY: Inspect O-ring with 10x optical loupe prior to mating. Apply Fluorosilicone grease (Part #HW-LUB-02) every 50 mating cycles.
When deploying in ambient temperatures below -20°C (-4°F), allow the GNSS module 90 seconds to execute cold-start ephemeris acquisition before logging coordinate fixes. Lithium Iron Phosphate battery capacity diminishes by approximately 12% at -30°C.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Enable internal thermostatic pulse heater mode in sub-zero deployments to maintain peak discharge voltage.
