MUNICIPAL LEAGUE BASEBALL

In our town, summer Friday evenings follow an unwritten civic rhythm. Long before the sun dips below the grain silos at the western edge of the county, the parking lot at Municipal Memorial Park begins filling with pickup trucks and family station wagons. Machinists from Miller Electric, bank tellers from Carter Bank & Trust, and hardware clerks from Harris Hardware swap their work boots for cleats.

Municipal League Baseball was born in the summer of 1938 during the grand opening of the municipal waterworks. What began as an informal exhibition between downtown merchants and foundry workers quickly solidified into a civic institution. Generations of families have occupied the same wooden grandstand seats behind home plate, keeping score in pencil on printed newsprint sheets.

The mechanical split-flap scoreboard perched over Field 01 was commissioned in 1964, constructed by local rail yard technicians using surplus industrial relays and hand-painted steel flap leaves. For over sixty years, its distinctive mechanical clatter has echoed across the outfield grass—a reassuring sound that announces a line-drive double into the right-field gap just as clearly as the crack of a wooden bat.
